Event description
What is your Antarctica? - An evening with Captain Zanna Baker
Capt. Zanna Baker was part of the Ice Maiden expedition which broke records in January 2018, travelling 1704km across Antarctica in 61 days.
The six Ice Maidens were the first all-female team to make the crossing unassisted, the first team to complete the challenge with no prior polar experience and counted the youngest ever person to make the journey amongst their number.
Between the ages of seven and 16, Zanna attended St Swithun’s, where, as a music scholar, she was most often found in the music school but also played lacrosse. She now follows her passion for languages and the outdoors as the Regional Advisor for Somalia within the British Army.
When she was 18, Zanna was inspired by a two-month mountaineering and scientific expedition to South Georgia and the Falkland Islands with the British Exploring Society during her gap year. During that expedition, and greatly influenced by one of the leaders, she realised that she was physically capable of so much more than she had previously thought. Her life-goal to walk to the South Pole arose from that experience. Never sitting still for long, Zanna has travelled extensively including long periods in Nepal and the Middle East.
Having never been the fittest or the fastest, Zanna firmly believes that everyone is capable of doing something extraordinary in life and that we should never underestimate our abilities.
Members of the school community, parents and school guests are invited to this event.
