Proposed change to OGA Constitution and Vote: Explanatory Notes
“When the OGA was formed, it was necessary to have a group of volunteers to form a Committee to run it, and those who have served on the Committee for a long time will remember the days when we had to manage all the mailings, sending out the Chain and organise events.
“As each year has gone by, the number of OGs has obviously increased, and the workload in running a vibrant and engaging alumnae association has increased in parallel. The school decided therefore some years ago that it was necessary to employ a member of staff to help run the operation. Today, two part time members of staff, Veryan and Kelly, have taken on the task of running all the Old Girls’ activities and communications - in addition to their commitment of running the school’s development programme. I hope you agree that the work they have done on re-designing the OGA Chain magazine, the new monthly OGA e-news bulletins and the new professional sector events, university reunions, career speed networking and now virtual talks, are all welcome additions to the Association.
“At our last OGA Committee meeting, we agreed that in light of this development and the fact that it is has become harder to find volunteers, we needed to adapt. The OGA Committee therefore is proposing that the Old Girls’ Association will continue to run, but will be led by the school itself, rather than by a committee of volunteers.
“That is not to say that the school does not need our voluntary help; they need our support more than ever, but as OGA Ambassadors, rather than as committee members.
“The school has asked me to appeal for more people who may be willing to act as OGA Ambassadors. There will be no need to commit to regular meetings, just have a willingness to be called upon to see if you can come along to a particular event or help spread the word about something coming up; or simply act as a sounding board and offer advice. If you are interested, please email OGA@stswithuns.com.
To gain agreement and to formalise this change, we look back to the 1981 OGA constitution which states that the ‘constitution may be amended in accordance with any resolutions duly passed at an Annual General Meeting’”
Rebecca Rothman
OGA Committee President
