Following on from the success of the summer term history of art evening classes, St Swithun’s are excited to announce that the dates for the autumn term history of art evening classes.
The classes will be on a Monday afternoon in the Old Junior School hall from 1630 hrs to 1730 hrs.
In this series of lectures, we will be focusing on particular artistic movements and genres integral to the history of art. You will look in detail at the historical and social contexts of those movements and explore particular, iconic artworks of the main artists involved. The following lectures will take place on the following days:
25 September – Sculpture in 15th century Florence: The Masterworks of Donatello and Andrea del Verrocchio 2 October – The Dutch Golden Age: Rembrandt van Rijn and Johannes Vermeer 9 October – The Female Impressionists in Paris: Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt 6 November – Norwegian Expressionism: Edvard Munch 13 November – Turn of the Century Vienna: Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele 20 November – Photography as Art and Expression: Julia Margaret Cameron and Sally Mann 4 December – Chris Ofili and the YBAs
These diverse and fascinating movements and works by iconic artists will be examined in depth and contexts such as religious tensions and social climbing in the Dutch republic, the controversy of the female artist in 19th century France, the relationship between art and mental illness and the role of black culture in contemporary art will be explored in great detail. Seminal works by artists as famous as Rembrandt and Gustav Klimt will be discussed alongside paintings and photographs by more recent and less well known artists and their continuing impact and relevance will be exposed and analysed.
The lectures are free to attend for Old Girls and members of the St Swithun’s community. Refreshments will be provided.
