Following on from the success of the previous history of art evening classes in December and January, St Swithun’s Art Department are very pleased to announce the continuation of the history of art evening classes on Mondays after the May half term.
The classes will be on a Monday afternoon in the Old Junior School Hall from 16:30 – 17:30 hrs with refreshments provided.
The lectures will be focusing on 5 famous artworks, their artists and the fascinating contexts surrounding them. The following artworks will be discussed on the following dates:
5th June – Sir Christopher Wren, St Paul’s Cathedral, 1675- 1710 12th June – Francisco Goya, The 3rd May, 1808, 1814 19th June – Augustus Egg, Past and Present I-III, 1858 26th June – Umberto Boccioni, Unique Forms of Continuity in Space, 1913 3rd July – Frida Kahlo, Self – Portrait on the Border between Mexico and the USA, 1932
These compelling artworks will be examined in depth, the artists behind them will be laid bare and contexts such as the ‘fallen woman’ and Victorian sexuality and morality, Italian Futurism and the ‘machine age’ and indigenous Mexican folklore and nationality will be explored with an artwork by the grand diva of painting herself, Frida Kahlo.
Iconic works of art such as Francisco Goya’s ‘Third May, 1808’ will be picked apart and its ongoing relevance discussed. How is an art work that is over 200 years old still shaking up the establishment and providing the viewer with such empathy when confronted with the atrocities of occupation and war? Is this image still as relevant today as it was in the 19th Century as history continues to repeat itself?
The lectures are free to attend for all Old Girls and members of the St Swithun's community. Refreshments will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there.
Miss Katie Lintott, our History of Art specialist at St Swithun’s School, is running the evening classes.
